On March 10, Laïla Amezian and Fatmas de Belgica returned to Molenbeek for Musikaa. The final of this four-year project, organized by Klarafestival and focused on local talent from the municipality, took place in the VK. Fatmas shared the stage with the Gnawa musicians of Karkaba.
Fatmas de Belgica is a women's choir led by Laïla Amezian that draws inspiration from the chaabi tradition to develop its own repertoire. Building on traditional elements such as lamentation, poetry in the Moroccan Arabic Darija dialect, and trance-like rhythms, the choir adds Western vocal elements to create contemporary polyphonic arrangements.
For this latest edition of Musikaa, Laïla invited us to an encounter between the Fatmas and the musicians of Karkaba, the Gnawa training project led by mâalem Driss Filali and percussionist Mohamed Saïd Akasri.
A new and unlikely exchange between trance rhythms interwoven with ancestral incantations on the one hand, and melodious, intoxicating voices that echo them harmoniously on the other. A daring experimental project in which Gnawa music is infused with light vocals and subtle melodies!
