Sara Moonen studied classical piano as a child and later taught herself various musical disciplines such as singing, percussion, and guitar. She loves grooves, writes lyrics, and composes music for projects such as Whocat, GRAAF, and Salamba. She contributes music to various hip-hop artists and is active as a percussionist in a wide range of projects.
Sara has been passionate about music and singing since she was a child. She started writing songs herself on an old upright piano in the corner of the living room. She then began taking classical piano lessons at the academy. As a teenager, she immersed herself in percussion, discovered the synergy of grooving together, and jammed for hours with friends. She also developed a love for hip hop and wrote down lyrics (sometimes phonetically) so she could sing along.
Sara has had a passion for music and singing from a very early age. As a child, she began composing her own songs on an old piano that sat in the corner of the living room, because she thought it looked lonely when no one was playing it. This was followed by classical piano lessons at the academy. In her teens, she immersed herself in percussion, discovering the synergy of groove in hour-long jam sessions with friends. She also developed a taste for hip-hop and wrote the lyrics (sometimes phonetically) of songs she heard and then performed herself.
After studying communications in Brussels, she moved to Barcelona. Her musical curiosity was whetted by influences from all over the world. Back in our capital, she learned to play the guitar and continued to write lyrics and perform with various groups. She took a series of courses, workshops and master classes to hone her knowledge of musical harmony.
In 2014, she formed the Brussels-based pop band Whocat, with whom she performed over 150 concerts across Belgium, the UK, France and the Netherlands. Following their debut EP “Blueprints” (2015), the band presented the full album “Joyful Rebellion” in 2019 with launch gigs at the AB and Esperanzah, among others.
Alongside her artistic career, Sara also puts a lot of energy behind the scenes in the music industry. She champions the emancipation of female artists and is one of the driving forces behind MetX, where she is currently part of the artistic team.
Over the last few years, Sara has been firing new arrows at her bow: on the one hand, she has begun collaborating with a number of hip-hop artists such as Samoeraï. On the other hand, she created the music for “GRAAF”, a series of educational concerts with schools for Jeugd & Muziek. Active as a percussionist with Lay This Drum, she has led the participatory percussion group Salamba since 2024. With the latter, she is taking part in FRAP! a new multidisciplinary artistic trajectory as part of the Urban Renewal Contract (URC7) “Around the Gare du Midi”.
