Isra Alonso Artist-in-Residence

Israel Alonso 1

In 2025, Mexican musician Isra Alonso starts an artistic residency at MetX. Known for projects such as Día de Muertos and Banda Quetzal, Isra enjoys building bridges between traditional Mexican music and other genres. For 2 years, he will work as an artist-in-residence to develop two projects: a series of participatory jam sessions and a completely new professional production.

During this period, Isra plans to develop a participatory project around the Fandangos. Inspired by this Mexican festivities composed of Son Jarocho and traditional dance, he will organise jam sessions, open to other styles of music, throughout the Brussels Region.

In collaboration with MetX, the Muziekpublique Academy and local partners in different municipalities, he will invite musicians and singers of all levels and backgrounds to gather around the tarima (a wooden platform on which one can practice zapateado and other rhythmic dance styles). The first sessions are planned as from May. Stay tuned!

Isra will also create a brand new professional production, mixing influences from Son Jarocho, European baroque music and jazz. The first phase will be dedicated to artistic research and repertoire creation, so that this new ensemble can perform as from the summer of 2026.
