Jam sessions with traditional music from Mexico and other horizons
As part of his artistic residency at MetX, our musician Isra Alonso is developing a participatory project around Fandangos. Inspired by this Mexican festival, which combines traditional Son Jarocho music and Zapateado dance, he organises jam sessions that are open to all other styles of music found in Brussels. Each time in partnership with another venue across the city and featuring a varied line-up, Fusion Fandangos offers an immersive experience of unprecedented musical richness.
Workshops music and dance
Prior to the event, a short series of workshops on traditional Mexican dance and music can be organised in partnership with the venue hosting the Fandango. As an integral part of Mexican popular culture celebrations and rituals, Zapateado dance turns the body into a percussion instrument that complements and enriches traditional music. During the workshops, participants learn the rhythmic basics of Zapateado and Son Jarocho music, in order to form an ad hoc collective for the Fandango.
The artistic team is made up of Isra Alonso (Artistic coordinator, musician and Mexican Son Jarocho and Zapateado specialist) and musicians Sophien Bourire and Sylvain Boisvert. For each Fusion Fandango, this team will be joined by one or more guest musicians, participants from the music and dance workshops and students from the Son Jarocho course at the Muziekpublique Academy.
