Jo Zanders creates soundtrack for 100 Pas Presque in Bruges

Brugge 2025 49

On 1 March, the dance show ‘100 Pas Presque’ by Moroccan choreographer Taoufiq Izeddiou took over the Markt in Bruges. The dancers covered a distance of 100 steps in 60 minutes in a continuous crescendo of movement and music. Our musician Jo Zanders was in charge of the soundtrack, bringing together musicians from DROM, BRUiTAL and SPAAK for this occasion.

After cities such as Marrakech, Marseille, and Brussels, it was Bruges' turn to be the stage for 100 Pas Presque. This community arts project by Moroccan choreographer Taoufiq Izeddiou is actually a performance in slow motion. A group of dancers-participants cover a distance of 100 steps in exactly one hour.

"To walk is to fall constantly. To fall is to learn to walk.

To cross 100 meters in one hour and to slow down as if to resist the tumult of a running world.

The dancers continue in echoes and counterweights, the crescendo installed by the musicians on the public square."

Musicians create and play a score in crescendo especially for the occasion. The performance also follows that movement: it goes from slow to an exuberant finale, where bystanders are also invited to participate. At the request of Concertgebouw Brugge, MetX invited Jo Zanders from DeBATTERIJ to write the soundtrack and compose an ephemeral ensemble with musicians from DROM, BRUiTAL, SPAAK and a number of guests.

Taoufiq Izzediou on the collaboration

“It's incredibly enjoyable working with Jo Zanders: with his extensive knowledge of world rhythms such as chaabi, he creates arrangements that really appeal to me.”

Working with Jo Zanders is incredibly enjoyable: with his extensive knowledge of world rhythms such as chaabi, he creates arrangements that really appeal to me. He also likes to innovate in terms of instrumentation, which leads to unusual soundscapes with, for example, voices or animal sounds. These new ‘characters’ provide not only the necessary rhythm but also an extra dramaturgical dimension.

The creation of the soundtrack went very smoothly, allowing the dancers in Bruges to quickly form an idea of the show. The quality of the music challenges us as dancers and choreographers to continue to push the boundaries of energy and endurance in our performance. We are very much looking forward to performing this show in Bruges, with all these new musical, physical, and spatial challenges."
