Jo Zanders is a self-taught percussionist and luthier. Driven by his passion for original grooves, mobile percussion and the street as a stage, he founded DE BATTERIJ in Leuven and helped create groups like DROM, BRUiTAL and Fanfakids.
As a child, Jo was already fascinated by the marching bands of sharpshooters parading through the streets of his native village in Limburg. During his studies in social and cultural anthropology at the K.U. Leuven, he meets Luc Mishalle and becomes a member of Al Harmoniah. With this orchestra, he travels throughout Europe and Morocco, broadening his musical horizons and stimulating his curiosity.

After further trips to Brazil and Morocco, Jo begins to focus more on making drums and writing his own repertoires. In 2000, he takes part in the first Zinneke Parade in Brussels. This is where Fanfakids, a group of percussionists made up of young people from Molenbeek, is born.
Within MetX and DE BATTERIJ, he created groups with unique sounds: Lokomotiv, Velotronix, then DROM and BRUiTAL. He also made a name for himself in the folk world as a minimalist percussionist. His collaborations and concerts have taken him to South Africa, China, Benin, Congo, Scotland and the Czech Republic.
