Fanfakids are celebrating a quarter of a century of rhythm, resilience and imagination! The perfect opportunity to shine a light on this percussion group created by and for the young people of Brussels. We followed the group members and their mentors and documented their history, methodology and exceptional journey in a podcast, a booklet and a video documentary.
Last spring, Turid Sintobin from DEMOS/publiq visited all the schools and rehearsal rooms in Brussels where Fanfakids can be found. She spoke with the people who form the core of the group and compiled their stories, experiences and reflections in a booklet, which also contains photos and memorable moments from the last 25 years.
Want to know how young drummers from Brussels make music with their counterparts in Athens and Amsterdam, breaking down barriers and taking to the streets as their stage? In 35 minutes, Meike De Roest takes you on a journey through 25 years of rhythm, resilience and solidarity. She talks with the founders, the mentors who were once Fanfakids themselves, and the young people of today.
This summer, videographer Klaas Boelen followed Strak-X, a group of boys and girls who have proven themselves with Fanfakids. He filmed them during an Erasmus+ exchange in Brussels with other young people from Rotterdam, Grenoble and Antwerp, among other places.
In 2018, Fanfakids left their familiar neighbourhood of Molenbeek to take part in a musical exchange in Benin, West Africa. Journalist Annabelle Van Nieuwenhuyse accompanied them on their journey and produced a series of reports for BRUZZ.
